22K (916) Gold Purity & Verification Guide
At New Bhubaneshwari Jewellers, transparency and trust are at the core of everything we craft. Whether you are buying your first gold ring or a complete bridal collection, understanding gold purity helps you make confident, informed decisions.
1. What is 22K Gold (916 Hallmarked Gold)?
Pure gold in its original state is 24 Karat (99.9% pure). However, 24K gold is extremely soft, pliable, and prone to bending or scratching, making it unsuitable for intricate jewellery.
To give gold the strength required for daily wear and intricate crafting, pure gold is alloyed with copper, silver, or zinc.
Purity Ratio: 22K gold contains 91.67% pure gold and 8.33% alloy metals (high purity silver, Copper, and other).
The "916" Stamp: The term "916 gold" is simply another name for 22K gold, representing its 91.6% purity standard.
2. Strength, Uses & Limitations of 22K Gold
| Feature | Details |
| Ideal Uses | Perfect for traditional wedding jewellery, heavy necklaces, bangles, chains, daily-wear rings, and religious items. |
| Durability & Strength | Striking the perfect balance, 22K gold offers maximum gold content while remaining durable enough to hold shapes and intricate engravings for generations. |
| Where It Cannot Be Used | Because it is still relatively soft, 22K gold cannot securely hold delicate gemstones or high-tension diamond settings (where 18K or 14K gold is preferred). Extremely fine delicate wires may also deform if pulled hard. |
3. How We Craft 22K Gold at New Bhubaneshwari Jewellers
With over 20 years of master goldsmithing (karigari) experience, our local artisans follow rigorous quality checks:
Melting & Alloying: Pure 24K gold bars are precisely melted with high-grade alloys to achieve an exact 91.6%+ ratio.
Exceeding Standards: Unlike mass-produced jewellery that sits right on the minimum purity margin, our hand-alloyed batches are consistently tested to ensure purity stays higher than standard 22K.
Handcrafted Precision: Our local karigars shape, solder, and polish each piece by hand before sending it to government-approved hallmarking centers for HUID laser engraving.
4. What is HUID and How Do You Verify It?
What is HUID?
HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification. It is a unique 6-digit alphanumeric code (e.g., AB1234) laser-stamped onto every single piece of gold jewellery alongside the BIS logo and purity mark (22K916).
How to Verify Your Jewellery’s HUID:
You can verify the authenticity of any gold ornament purchased from us in under a minute using the official BIS CARE App (by the Bureau of Indian Standards):
Download the BIS CARE mobile app (available on Android & iOS).
Open the app and tap on "Verify HUID".
Type the 6-digit alphanumeric HUID stamped on your jewellery piece.
The app will immediately display:
Name of the jeweler (New Bhubaneshwari Jewellers)
Jeweler's BIS registration number
Hallmarking center details & date of testing
Article type and exact purity (22K)
There could be other information with Product images and HUID image, BIS changes this regularly.
5. Understanding Gold Pricing
Why 22K Gold Costs Less Than 24K Gold
Gold prices are calculated based on weight and purity:
24K Gold Price: Represents 100% (close to ~99.9%) pure gold rate (used for bullion/bars).
22K Gold Price: Is calculated at roughly 91.6% of the 24K gold rate, making the base metal cost lower per gram than 24K gold.
Final Invoice Calculation:
(22K Gold Rate at our shop × Weight in Grams) + Making Charges +Other charges(if applicable)+ GST.
Historical Pricing & Future Expectations
Previous Trends: Historically, gold has proven to be one of the safest long-term hedges against inflation. Over the past decades, gold values have consistently increased, offering steady capital appreciation alongside sentimental value.
Future Possibilities: While daily gold rates fluctuate based on global economic factors, currency movements, and central bank reserves, market history shows gold maintains strong long-term purchasing power. It remains one of the most reliable wealth-preservation assets for families.
